Advanced dehumidification as a critical component for chemical tanker operations

By implementing an advanced Munters dehumidification system on chemical tankers, rapid and reliable tank drying after cleaning is achieved, significantly reducing the time between cargo operations. Using rotary desiccant (adsorption wheel) technology, the system delivers fast, repeatable drying to low dew points, even in demanding maritime conditions, ensuring minimal condensation risk and optimal conditions for sensitive cargo.

Compared to conventional drying methods, this solution provides more predictable drying times and superior performance in cold and humid environments, directly translating into reduced vessel turnaround time, improved operational efficiency, and lower maintenance costs, while maintaining high safety and reliability standards.

Desiccant dehumidifiers vs. Alternative tank drying methods

Rotary desiccant (adsorption) dehumidifiers provide fast and reliable moisture removal to very low dew points, making them the preferred solution for drying chemical cargo tanks. Unlike conventional methods, they ensure consistent performance regardless of ambient temperature and humidity.

  • Refrigerant (condensing) dehumidifiers rely on cooling air below its dew point. Their efficiency drops significantly at low temperatures, and they struggle to achieve very low moisture levels required for chemical cargoes. Drying times are often longer and less predictable.

  • Hot-air drying (heaters/blowers) only reduces relative humidity by increasing temperature, without actually removing moisture. This makes the process unreliable and energy-intensive, with a high risk of re-condensation.

Key advantages of desiccant systems:

  • Achieve very low dew points and stable humidity control
  • Reduce vessel turnaround time after tank cleaning
  • Enable fast and predictable tank drying
  • Lower maintenance costs and corrosion risk
