Remedica, a leading pharmaceutical company based in Limassol, Cyprus, has been producing and distributing medicines and pharmaceutical raw materials in over 140 countries for more than 60 years. The cleanroom project at their Limassol facility is part of their strategy to modernize and expand capacity in line with ISO 14644 and GMP standards.
The project Design & Installation of Clean Rooms encompasses the complete design and implementation of cleanroom systems, from conceptual and basic design to “as-built” documentation and system validation. The total planned facility area is approximately 1,000 m², while the first phase – covering around 400 m² – was successfully completed and put into operation in June 2025. This phase included cleanrooms for tablet production, mixing, and granulation, while the next phase will include the tablet coating section and equipment washing areas.
The scope of work included architectural and construction works, installation of panel cleanroom systems, LED lighting with UV protection, interlock doors, and epoxy flooring. Complete mechanical installations were carried out, including HVAC, hot and cold water systems, steam, compressed air, central vacuum, and air dust extraction systems. Additionally, electrical, telecommunication, and BMS/EMS installations based on the Siemens Desigo CC platform were implemented, along with a fire detection and alarm system.
All areas were constructed in accordance with ISO Class 8 and GMP Class D requirements, with parameters of 20–24°C temperature, relative humidity below 30%, air change rate of 10–20 ACH, differential pressure of 10–15 Pa (25 Pa in pass-throughs), H14 HEPA filtration, and maximum allowable noise up to 70 dB(A). The systems were designed for two operating modes: 100% fresh air configuration with multi-stage filtration, and 20% fresh air with energy efficiency through a rest mode operation.
Each room is equipped with standard LED lighting, as well as the option to select lighting for photosensitive products (different frequency range). Floors in most areas are electro-conductive.
The cleanrooms are designed to provide a completely safe environment for production workers. For example, within the cleanrooms, there are weighing chambers aimed at protecting personnel handling active pharmaceutical substances. The principle is that weighing is performed in a chamber with laminar airflow, ensuring that workers breathe completely clean air, free of particles. Particles generated during weighing are drawn into the chamber and retained there by the installed filters.
All air discharged into the external environment passes through final HEPA filtration, which means that it does not pollute the surroundings. In this way, the exhaust air is actually cleaner than the outside air, so it can be said that the factory effectively purifies the air in its environment.
Energy efficiency is another important advantage of the solutions we implemented. Remedica received funding from the European Union for the replacement of chillers on the factory roof, based on the solution we designed, which ensures significant electricity savings
The biggest challenge was in the design itself, namely implementing the most advanced solutions within a very limited existing space, as well as executing the works according to the factory-in-factory (FiF) concept, while strictly adhering to deadlines and the highest GMP standards. This meant carrying out the construction work in parallel with ongoing production in the surrounding areas, which continued uninterrupted.
An additional complexity was that the project was executed in Cyprus, in an environment and climate significantly different from what we are accustomed to. The works were carried out in close proximity to the sea, where high humidity, a saline microclimate, and temperature variations required extra attention during the planning and execution of all installations and construction works.
The first phase of the project was officially commissioned on June 5, 2025, providing Remedica with a fully functional facility for the production of solid and liquid dosage forms in compliance with European regulations
Upon completion of the installations, system commissioning and balancing were carried out, followed by IQ/OQ validations in accordance with all GMP and ISO 14644 standards. The facility was handed over to the investor in a technically compliant and fully functional condition, complete with all technical documentation, certificates of conformity, and validation protocols.
Works on the next phase are currently underway, along with the preparation of project documentation for subsequent phases, which will include tablet coating and IBC container washing.
